The Lloyd E. Strickland Memorial Family Reunion

2010

Lloyd Eugene Strickland - at approimately 20 years of age

Lloyd E. Strickland

April 17, 1929 - November 22, 1989

Our Family Reunion began in response to the desire expressed by my mother, Pearl Strickland, widow of the late Lloyd Eugene Strickland, to see regular gatherings of her offspring and their families. Initially, she requested that it be held on Thanksgiving Day, and for many years, it has been. The most recent one was held on November 26, 2009.

Over the years, as the family grew and scattered, it became apparent that maintaining that tradition has adversely impacted attendance. Many of our relatives are employed in positions that prohibit travel during the weeks surrounding Thanksgiving, or live at such distances that travel for a mid-week celebration was not practical.

In discussions concerning the matter, with my mother and my siblings, we agreed that the purposes of the gathering would be served just as well, if not better, if the gathering were held at a time more convenient to all of the extended family. As a result of those discussions, I put the matter before the entire body of attending family members, at the 2009 Reunion.

It was the consensus among the attending members that the timing of the Reunion should be moved to the Spring, preferably early May. In accordance with that consensus, I am announcing that the 2010 Strickland Family Reunion is to be held Saturday, May 8, 2010.

- Henry

Where:

The gathering will take place at a familiar venue - Group Shelter B at Fort Yargo State Park, near Winder, Georgia. If you have questions about our reservation, you can see the confirmation notice here:
http://www.aaagis.com/reunion/confirm.jpg.

Please note that there is a $500 per car per day parking fee for all Georgia State Parks. You would think that parking would be included in the facility rental, but it isnít. It would be prudent to share rides in order to minimize the impact of these fees. In past years, we have subsidized parking for everyone, sometimes with help from other family members. As we are now on a fixed income, we will not be able to continue doing so on that scale. If the parking fee is going to be a make-or-break proposition for your attendance, please contact Henry directly, as soon as you know. We want you there.

Information about, and directions/maps to the park can be found at:
http://www.gastateparks.org/net/go/parks.aspx?LocationID=61&s=0.0.1.5

CAUTION: This venue is ON A LAKE! It is NOT an approved swimming area and there is NO LIFEGUARD! Bear this in mind when you abandon your children to the wilds of Georgia.

Lodging:

If you are from out-of-town, and plan to bunk with local relatives, please make your arrangements directly with them, and do it early. Don't assume that just because they know you are coming, they will have room for you. Others may have already called dibs on the available beds!

There are only two known hotels in the nearest town (Winder, GA), the Jameson Inn, and the Best Western-Winder. Reviews on these hotels are mixed, and rates at this time of year are high. Other, less expensive hotel lodging is available in nearby towns (20 miles or closer). Additional options can be found at various locations along Interstate 85, if you want to search further afield.

Fort Yargo has R/V and tent camping available (40 campsites) and a limited number of yurts and cottages. There is a two-night minimum rental requirement on accomodations within the park. Campsites are reasonable, but the yurts are (IMHO) simply an expensive way to be uncomfortable. The cottages are more expensive than the local hotels.

The Reunion Meal

Since the Reunion isnít going to be a Thanksgiving feast, we wonít be preparing the traditional turkey and ham dinner. The theme this year will be a Spring cookout. Karen and Henry will provide hotdogs, hamburgers and buns, as well as basic condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise), disposable plates, cups, and flatware. Weíll also bring charcoal for the grills.
